# Kangxi Stroke Counting · 康熙筆畫部首

Five-grid name numerology counts a character’s strokes by the **Kangxi dictionary (康熙字典)**, where several radicals are counted by their **original full form**, not the simplified writing form. This often differs from how a character is written today — getting it right matters.

## Radicals counted specially

| Radical 部首 | Counted as | Strokes | Example |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 氵 | 水 | 4 | 治 = 4 + 5 = 9 |
| 艹 | 艸 | 6 | 芳 = 6 + 4 = 10 |
| 扌 | 手 | 4 | 振 = 4 + 7 = 11 |
| 忄 | 心 | 4 | 怡 = 4 + 5 = 9 |
| 氵/sanddian aside, 阝 (left) | 阜 | 8 | 陳 = 8 + 8 = 16 |
| 阝 (right) | 邑 | 7 | 郭 = 8 (享) + 7 = 15 |
| 月 (as flesh) | 肉 | 6 | 育 = 6 + 4 = 10 |
| 犭 | 犬 | 4 | 猛 = 4 + 8 = 12 |
| 王 (as jade) | 玉 | 5 | 玲 = 5 + 5 = 10 |
| 礻 | 示 | 5 | 祐 = 5 + 5 = 10 |
| 衤 | 衣 | 6 | 裕 = 6 + 7 = 13 |
| 辶 | 辵 | 7 | 達 = 7 + 9 (羍) but counted 16 |

## Numbers in characters

Numerals as components also take their **numeric value**: 一=1, 二=2, 三=3, 四=4, 五=5, 六=6, 七=7, 八=8, 九=9, 十=10 (so 萬 = 15, not its written strokes).
