The **year’s stem** then yields that year’s four transformations. This is the shallowest of the three layers — the stem is the same for everyone in a given year; what differs is which of **your** palaces it lands in. ## How a year is read 1. Find the palace **whose branch matches the year’s branch** — that is the annual palace (太歲宮). 2. Its palace name and stars say which part of life the year mainly lands on. 3. Take the **year’s stem** and derive the four transformations; note which star and which palace each one lands in.
