The Chinese zodiac (生肖) assigns one of twelve animals — Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig — to a birth year by the lunar calendar. Each animal maps to an earthly branch and an element, sketching personality, and the branches harmonise or clash to give marriage compatibility (合婚).
