The annual palace is the one whose branch matches the year’s branch; its stars and palace name say which part of life the year lands on. The year’s stem then yields that year’s four transformations. This is the shallowest of the three layers — the stem is the same for everyone in a given year; what differs is which of your palaces it lands in.

How a year is read

1. Find the palace whose branch matches the year’s branch — that is the annual palace (太歲宮).
2. Its palace name and stars say which part of life the year mainly lands on.
3. Take the year’s stem and derive the four transformations; note which star and which palace each one lands in.

The stem is the same for everyone in a given year. What differs is which of your palaces it lands in — reading the transformations without the landing palace gives everyone the same answer.
