Five-grid name numerology counts a character’s strokes by the Kangxi dictionary (康熙字典), where several radicals are counted by their original full form, not the simplified writing form. This often differs from how a character is written today — getting it right matters.

Numbers in characters
Numerals as components also take their numeric value: 一=1, 二=2, 三=3, 四=4, 五=5, 六=6, 七=7, 八=8, 九=9, 十=10 (so 萬 = 15, not its written strokes).

Schools differ on a few characters; when unsure, confirm against a Kangxi dictionary.
